Bummed

I don't know if it's Daria's death, the cold weather or a Monday-morning phenomenon, but I feel down today. A pain in my ribs, that shows up periodically, is also plaguing me. Usually, a pain would worry me, but I've experienced it before and I just had a CT scan, so I know there isn't anything there.

So I'll bundle up and make the best of today, even if I am a little blue.

    Calling all angels
    Jon Wells

    January 23, 2011

Renowned Hamilton glass artist Shirley Elford has said that every one of her signature angels has a story.

And now, angel-owners far and wide are being invited to share those stories.

Elford has discussed the concept in the past with longtime friend, Sue Boychuk.

“The angels mean something different to everyone who has one; they truly inspire people,” Boychuk said. “This is a great way to gather stories from everyone who has an angel.”

In a feature called Calling All Angels, The Spectator is asking readers who own an Elford angel to submit reflections on how they came to have it, where they keep it and what it means to them. Readers are also encouraged to submit a photo of their angel. The Spectator will collect the submissions and publish them together at a later date.

Elford told The Spec she loves the concept: “I love the idea of listening to what the angels have to say.”

Boychuk added that she believes her friend will draw great strength from reading the accounts as she continues to battle a terminal case of ovarian cancer.

“Shirley’s angels bring joy and work little miracles.”

Elford was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. Her story was featured in The Spectator recently and is still available online at thespec.com.

She recently partnered with the Hamilton Community Foundation to set up the Shirley M. Elford Gift of Today Fund, which accepts donations to increase support and education for women fighting ovarian cancer and those who help care for them. For more information on the fund, call Sheree Meredith, vice-president of philanthropic services at the foundation, at 905-523-5600.

Meredith, too, loves the Calling All Angels concept.

“Angels have an aura about them; they offer warmth and hope and protection, which is really so much of what Shirley is about.”

To offer a submission about your Shirley Elford glass angel, e-mail citizen@thespec.com and put “Angel” in the subject line. If possible, please include a high-resolution digital photo of the angel.

  4. Tina, I think every time we hear of another person's death from this crap, we all get a "punch in the gut." Here's to better days.
